Hannibal, MO – Katy Welch, the owner of Java Jive in historic downtown Hannibal, is reopening the recently closed general store on Main Street. Clemens General Store will feature many of the favorites missed by locals since the closing of the store in 2023 including the deli, flavored sodas, and candy.
Katy Welch is a longtime downtown merchant and also the President of the merchants organization, the Historic Hannibal Marketing Council. When the former general store closed she recognized a need in the downtown for additional retail locations. She plans to open Clemens General Store at 305 North Main Street as a nostalgic old time general store featuring a deli with a wide selection of sliced meats, cheeses, marinated salads, and sandwiches. The new store will also bring back a local favorite with a huge selection of flavors of bottled sodas that range from bubble gum to key lime pie as well as a large variety of nostalgic and bulk wrapped candies.
Clemens General Store will open this fall with an exact date to be announced later. The store will open the front portion featuring the deli, soda, and candy to begin. The full retail back portion of the store will open by spring 2025. The retail portion of the store will feature old time toys, puzzles for all ages, cookbooks, charcuterie servingware, personal care and travel items, and a Christmas section.
Owner, Katy Welch, says she is excited “to bring back a retail location that offers something for everyone. I have a great love for all things vintage and nostalgic and look forward to filling this new store with treats, toys, home goods, and candy that bring back fond memories for people of all ages. I also look forward to offering a unique and wide variety of cheeses, meats, and accouterments that have not been previously offered locally.”
Clemens General Store will be open 7 days a week, 10am-7pm. The store will offer a few tables for dine-in lunch or dinner at the deli. The deli counter will offer sandwiches made fresh as well as grab and go salads and other meal options and sliced meats and cheeses by the pound. There will be a wide variety of bottled sodas, waters, juices, and other unique beverages to choose from and a grocery selection that will include breads, dairy, chips, crackers, jams, and more. The candy selection will include many bulk wrapped candies to choose from as well as nostalgic packaged candies.
